How to care for a toenail injury caused by a severed toe?

My daughter had her big toe almost completely severed at a 45 degree angle. The doctor reattached the toe three weeks ago. The stitches were removed yesterday. The toenail was removed. The nail bed of the toenail is still bloody and mushy looking. How long before the nail bed is no longer wet, bloody and moist? The doctor told me to keep it wrapped but to change the bandage now every day. They gave me occlusive petrolatum gauze strips to put on it before the gauze. Should i use this? Can the toe get wet? How long before the toenail bed begins to heal? How long before the toenail begins to regrow? The toe itself is beginning to heal but the toenail bed still is gross looking. I just want to know the proper way to care for the toenail bed so it gets well quickly. Thank you so much.

DocPod 		Keep using the gauze.
It is hard to give any specific advice without seeing it and knowing the extent of damage to the nail matrix (growing area at base of nail)
If there was any damage there, then there is a very high probability that the nail will grow back deformed.
