Stress riser?

I started experiencing pain on my 3rd metatarsal bone 4 weeks ago and went to see my podiatrist. The symptoms of the pain led him to believe it could be a stress fracture but an x-ray (and a second xray 2 weeks later) showed no fracture, only thickening of the bone. He referred to it as a stress riser. It's been 5 weeks now and the pain (mainly when I walk) has only lessened by a bit. If it is a stress riser, how long should I expect the pain to remain?

Never heard of a "stress riser" as a diagnosis before.
