Toe joint is sore. ?

My 4th toe on my right foot has been acting up for toe weeks now. 85% of the time it gives me no problem, then it will randomly send a sharp pain from the back of my toe to the front. There is a little swelling on the bottom of the toe right at the joint to the foot but no discoloration. I've tried to make it sore a few times to try and figure out what causes the pain, but I can't make it sore when itry. It comes randomly and I have to wait a couple of minutes then it's back to normal. What could my toes problem be?
