What will happen if you leave an ingrown toe for like almost over year?

i've had an ingrown toenail for almost a year and ive been to the doctor 2 times and they didn't fix it then i started doing home treatments w warm water and salt and nothing then w this cream for coughing and it seems to be working but i wanted to make sure what will happen if it didn't because i can still feel pain when i bump into something w my toe nail (in accident)

DocPod 		If you leave it, it will hurt; it may get infected and become serious.
What sort of "doctor" did you see? The offending piece of nail needs to be removed. See a good podiatrist.
