Why does my right big toe often crack with each step and cramp up at night to a 90 degree angle?

My right big toe cracks often with each step. I have developed pain in the front of my ankle in line with the big toe. At night my big toe cramps up at a 90 degree angle and the only way to straighten it is to massage the toe while holding it down and also massaging the ankle area as well.

This generally indicates some sort of muscle spasm that is triggered by a nerve problem. Its really hard to say any more with examining it.
