is backpacking safe if you have peripheral neuropathy in your feet?

I have peripheral neuropathy in both of my feet, and have recently been diagnosed as having Impaired Glucose Tolerance (prediabetes). I have extensive numbness across the front half of each foot but fortunately there is no pain.

One of the great loves of my life is backpacking; is it safe? Will carrying a 50-pound pack be safe? What about jogging? What can I do or not do? Thanks for your help!

It should be safe, but you need to take precautions. Due to the neuropathy you have decreased sensation, so if something goes wrong (eg blister or ankle sprain) you may not to aware of it, so may increase the amount of damage gets done.

So you need to take extraordinary precautions to prevent blisters and use high top boots to prevent ankle sprains and other trauma. You will also need to regularly inspect the feet for any signs of damage and act on them.

On a positive note, if you have IGT, then exercise is a really important way to prevent it progressing to full blown diabetes, so don't let a bit of neuropathy put you off!
