What's causing the separation between 2nd and 3rd toe...my pain in the ball of my foot?

I've had increasing separation between my 2nd and 3rd toes on my left foot for about the past 6 months. I've also had pain in the ball of my foot after running (and just daily walking too...no increase in mileage or ANYTHING like that that's causing it)...been to a podiatrist, xrayed and he said that I have a bunion on my left foot that causes me to cast off with the area behind my 2nd toe instead, and that's causing the pain. I have insoles and a metatarsal pad in my running shoes. I've just started noticing the toe separation. Could some sort of inflammation be causing this?

DocPod 		Yes, Often this is due to an inflammation of the bursa between the toes. Suggest you get this investigated further. Maybe the position of the met pad needs changing.
