Leave or treat Severs Disease ?

My 13 yr old son has pain at the back of his left heel. It was diagnosed by his family doctor as severs disease and we were told that he would just grow out of it. He is having trouble with sport and its making him miserable. I searched on the web and lots of treatments are mentioned, so I not sure if we should do something or just leave it as was suggested. Does anyone have some insights that could help?

That does not sound like very good advice. Yes, they do grow out of it eventually when the growth plate becomes bone. For reasons, you stated, it is important to treat it. It affects sports participation. I usually get the child on to calf muscles stretches and used a soft heel raise to cushion the heel and relieve some pull from the Achilles tendon. Ice packs can be sued after sport. You may have to cut back on some of the sports activities in the short term. Only a very small number to not respond to this sort of approach.
