orthotics or not?

Started experincing dorsal foot pain 2 months ago. Pain is worst at beginning of weightbearing and tends to warm up. Onset was gradual, but I was pretty active at the time- snowboarding, soccer, running. After one month, started to realize I was annoyed and stopped everything but soccer and started subbing out more and running less. Had 2 days where pain mostly disappeared and then it came back. Doctor thought it was probably degenerative due to old injury (fractured metatarsals 2, 3, 4 + surgery to correct) and was referred to podiatrist. X-rays were negative and pod thought it was the way I walk that was contributing to extra stress on joint. He rec'd orthotics... or dosing up on ibuprofen, staying off my feet, and waiting. PT friend of mine says PT would be a better option. Orthotics seem like a committment. PT seems overblown for a problem more annoying than crippling. I need options and unbiased advice!

DocPod 		If weightbearing is making it worse, then orthotics are definitly indicated. Physical therapy is also helpful, but may not help long term of the problem returns. I would suggest you try some cheap supports to see if they make a difference. If they do, they go for a good pair of foot orthotics.
