I can't find much information on laser but he said it's got about the same success rate as the shots. Can't decide which treatment to take. Not concerned about cost, just want to be able to walk without pain again.

The symptoms of the pain led him to believe it could be a stress fracture but an x-ray (and a second xray 2 weeks later) showed no fracture, only thickening of the bone. He referred to it as a stress riser. It's been 5 weeks now and the pain (mainly when I walk) has only lessened by a bit. Hello!
Have been dealing with a diagnosis of Posterior Tibial Tendonitis since June of 2015 in my left foot. This diagnosis was from my Podiatrist after an examination and x-ray. I work as an Licensed Nursing Assistant on a Locked Alzheimer's Unit, and I am on my feet for 8+ hours a night, constant fast walking, patient transfers, chasing escapees etc. Have gone through periods of foot sorness/aching in the past, and during one of these times, I happened to climb up a few flights of stairs and immediately was limping so bad, I could barely walk. Ankle was very swollen and tender to the touch. Friend who saw my ankle called it Pregnant Cankles! Had a similar flare up after a visit to NYC the year before climbing all the Subway stairs, but it resolved itself after a couple of weeks. I should add that I have had flat feet for my whole life and used to get ankle sprains very easily throughout childhood. With that said, I used to be a runner and never had any major issues with my feet. Podiatrist gave me a couple of different braces, soft strap-around one, to a Robo-Cop/Forrest Gump Magic Legs hard plastic one that I could not tolerate. Spent a couple weeks sitting on light-duty at work, rest, ice, elevating, epsom salt soaks to no avail. Spent time in Physical Therapy doing stretches, picking up marbles with my foot, some resistance band exercises, and a variation of the Graston Massage with no real lasting results. Tried getting motion control sneakers with over-the-counter orthotics, but nothing has worked. The only thing that helped, was when my Physical Therapist suggested I get an orthotic with a "medial heel posting" to help counter the over-pronation of my ankle/foot. So I purchased a Powerstep Orthotic with a 2 degree medial post. Though the arch support does aggravate my super flat feet, the posting does help. I have had to modify these OTC orthotics by adding a little more "height" to the heel post, but this sometimes led to some aching in my outer forefoot. My Podiatrist has been recommending a Custom Orthotic through his office for $450. I however was very, very surprised that my Insurance company, which is normally very good, would not cover one cent of the Orthotic since they deem it a "comfort measure" and have been told if I am not a diabetic it would not be covered. Sure, my Insurance will cover expensive braces, PT, and probably the surgery if I rupture the tendon, but not the little pieces of plastic that might avoid surgery, yeah, that is logical?! Now, I am at the point that during my work shift, my soreness is greatly reduced, although if I sit for more than 5-10 minutes, my ankle/foot tightens up and I will limp briefly as I start walking again. Interesting enough, have more discomfort just standing in one place than when I'm walking. When I get home after a full 8 hours on my feet, I limp after my drive home and need to ice the area. The next morning my ankle and even my achilles tendon seems tight, and yes, the mornings after a day off, my ankle is much less tight. So since my job involves being on my feet so long, will the tendonitis ever go away without me taking a longer break to rest or will it just flare up again once I start standing on them for hours at a time. Should I just bite-the-bullet and pay for the Custom Orthotics which will create the exact right height of heel posting to get me back to "neutral"? Have been told that OTC ones are just as good, would hate to pay all that money out of pocket and not have them help. Have been trying to lose weight, prob. 15-20 pounds overweight, but active. This tenacious tendonitis is so frustrating!! Any insights, suggestions would be great, thank you!

Is flat feet known to be associated with ankle pain/ strains?

Why does my arch keep cracking? I have flat feet (over-pronation) and also have prescription orthotics. But I would rather fix my feet than have to wear orthotics. I have started doing exercises to strengthen the feet and walking barefoot as much as possible. But I'm not sure HOW I should be walking when I do this - should I walk with the relevant muscles of the foot & leg in contraction (i.e. so that I am holding my arches in the correct position the whole time)? Or just walk however my feet want to (which right now is over-pronated and hurts my knees)? Will walking with the muscles contracted help them to strengthen quicker, or will it cause more damage because there is no relax-contract movement? Any advice gratefully received!

Thank you [:)]

Is it possible to get early acute compartment syndrome near the cuboid from a velco shoe strap?

Is it possible to get early acute compartment syndrome after foot irritation from walking and a shoe strap being too tight? (A velcro strap near the cuboid.)

Soon after walking, my shoe strap started feeling tight and my left foot hurt worse with each step. I took my shoe off for about 20 minutes while sitting down, then put it back on to walk to my car and kept the strap more loose. I was in agony with each step on my left foot.

It still hurt very badly even when I wasn't putting weight on it. When I got home I took my shoes and socks off and my left foot was purplish-blue compared to the right which was more white. The left was also slightly swolen above the cuboid area. I could barely move my foot and toes in any direction and my foot felt somewhat tingly and partially numb. The pain was moderate-severe without touch or weight bearing and very severe with weight bearing.

Long story shorter, I ended up at the ER. I thought perhaps it was a stress fracture. The doctor also thought it was a bone issue, but did not do a weight bearing x ray due to the pain. They did 3 x rays at different angles but nothing abnormal was seen.

The doctor did find a specific sensitive place in the foot that was along the 5th metatarsal bone area. I was advised to use crutches, given an orthopedic shoe and referred to an orthopedist.

I arrived at my appointment 2 days later, took off the shoe, and had 2 perfectly white feet with no pain, standing or otherwise except for a slight ache every now and then on the left edge of my foot. I was told I didn't need the crutches or ortho shoe anymore. The doc didn't know what was wrong with it except maybe capsulitis or waste-a-doctor's-time-itis. I asked if it could be a nerve problem and was quickly told no.

I was told to come back if it happened again so the doc could see the swelling/ color/ pain. This was a Friday. Doc said just to put ice on it if it happened over the weekend and wait until Monday to come in. He seemed shocked I had gone to the ER considering how normal it appeared 2 days later. I think he was trying to keep me from going back there unnecessarily. In a way I appreciate that but after doing some research of my symptoms online, compartment syndrome seemed the most compatible to my symptoms to me, and if it happened again over the weekend, I was afraid it could be an emergency.

Fortunately it didn't happen, but I am wondering if that could have been what happened to my foot. Neither the ER doctor nor the ortho doctor looked at the shoes I had been wearing. The ER doc did take pulses which were okay, but I read that pulses can be normal in compartment syndrome. My blood pressure was high at the ER. This could have been from the pain itself or maybe from cs? I would just like another opinion about what could have happened and wondering if early acute compartment syndrome was a possibility, that resolved on its own after pressure was released time went by. Thank you for your input.

calcaneal fracture ?

.............hi , i have a calcaneal fracture , i think that means a busted heel pad ....the bone is not broken ....my ortho says its not healing , been in a cast for 2 months ....walking on tip toes .....is it dangerous to walk on that foot ? i really need to go back to work .....my doctor says i might have my leg amputated .....is that a accurate assessment ? thank you .....

The role of foot orthoses in rheumatoid arthritis management ?

Rheumatoid arthritis remission- Do foot orthoses actually affect 'disease activity' or are they just preventing progressive deformity and associated pain. I wear a lot of heels and I notice by then end of the day my toes and the balls of my feet loose feeling. I read a tip about taping your third and fourth toes together to relieve some of the pain and pressure, is this true? And why? What does this do? Does this only work by taping these 2 toes in particular or can I tape together any toes?

Thank you,

I was given inserts, which I didn't wear for very long. The ankle problems have gotten worse over time but as an adult I started noticing another problem.

I stand and walk on the outside of the fifth toes, rather than the bottom. Aesthetically, I find it embarrassing. Fuctionally, I don't know if it's a result of, or a contributing factor to my flat feet, or if it's completely unrelated. I wasn't diagnosed with anything related to that, as a child, so it's possible that it's developed over time. To be specific a sliver of glazed ceramic tile. It went to deep for me to get and calloused or encapsulated. It wasnt a real bother at that time until about a year went by and it began to give me pain. I went to a Podiatrist who I had scrubbed with ( I'm a scrub tech) to get help. I told him my story and he did an in office procedure and really ignored the fact that I had a FB in my heel.He didnt see it until my post-op xray and then scheduled surgery at an outpatient center because of the depth of the tile in my heel. So 2 surgeries later and two podiatrists later and an expensive pair of orthotics later. I am in pain constantly. I have antalgic gait and the opposite knee and hamstring constantly ache. Its been about 5 yrs and I cannot seem to find any answers. I work full time as a surgical tech and thankfully am the medical records officer so I do get to sit sometime but scrubbing is difficult. It is progressively worsening and I see no solutions. I have insurance but cant afford to keep seeing doctors when I cant find answers other than everything I have tried. I constantly cut the callous that is dead center my left heel so I can walk a bit on that side. Its back n forth on my toes and right heel . All my muscles ache. I have a 3 level cervical fusion and my entire spine feels misaligned. From head to toe this absolutely sucks and any advice would be truly appreciated!!. I still manage but again this isnt where I expected to be at 47 yrs old. Thanks in advanced.

Do I need to see a doctor about my toenail?

I am nervous this may be early toenail fungus but last time my PCP said it looked fine.. My podiatrist prescribed new orthotics with the conventional accommodation (reverse Morton's extension and first ray cutout) for this problem. They have a polypropylene shell, metatarsal pad, and 3mm padded topcover. However, I can't seem to tolerate it. Compared to my previous orthotics, the new ones actually make the pain much worse. I have followed the prescribed break-in period (actually, even more gradual than recommended) and still I cannot wear the orthotics for more than an hour or two for more than a couple of days in a row before I have burning pain in my feet, ankles, and radiating up into my leg muscles that takes 3 or 4 days of not wearing the orthotics to resolve. I am diligent with stretches and use ice for the pain (can't tolerate NSAIDS due to stomach issues), but it doesn't help. It has been over a month of trying. My podiatrist is mystified as to why the accommodation is making me worse.

I am a 31 year-old female, not overweight, and am moderately active (though less so now due to pain) in low-medium impact activities. I put the orthotics in good quality, supportive shoes. I have seen numerous practitioners over the years, and the only thing they agree on is that my injuries often do not resolve in a typical manner, and that "gold standard" treatments often don't work for me the way they should.

Any ideas that I might try? I am getting desperate and nobody can help me.

Athletes foot and weird bumps ?

Hello,

About two weeks ago I suffered from what appeared to be athletes foot in between my toes and at the bottom. I have treated and continue to treat the athletes foot. However, I am now noticing small red dot/circles on my feet. I am not sure what they are and wanted to ask online before seeing a Podiatrist in person if it was something I could treat at home. I can also provide pictures if needed.

Thank you,

About 4 weeks ago I started running after a while and I think I caused too much pressure on my foot. So after 2/3 days I felt a sharp pain on the outer edge of my foot. The pain was sharp enough to make me not be able to walk. I rested for a week and didn't put any pressure on my foot. I still had pain so I visited a general doctor the week after I had the injury. He did an x-ray but he couldn't find anything wrong like a stress fracture. He gave me some anti-inflammatory medicine with a walking boot. Now after three weeks of starting my remedy, the pain is almost gone but I have another issue. When I start walking, just the moment I put all my weight on my recovered foot, I feel a popping sensation. This doesn't happen when I put partial weight. I would be grateful if you help me solve the issue. Is this gonna disappear after awhile or it's a serious issue? any advice?

2 Broken toes ?

I am an avid runner and running the Boston Marathon April 21. However, 5 weeks ago I broke my pinky and 4th toes. After medical evaluation the toes were taped and I am wearing a medical boot (this is 5th week) putting no significant pressure on the broken toes when possible (e.g. first 2 weeks on crutches). After 2 weeks, I stopped using the crutches and began walking. On the 4th week, because I need to keep up my training for Boston, I added running back into my schedule, slowly. My foot dr said if I can tolerate it, I can do it. Is the pain a normal occurrence due to the of the lack of use during healing as described in one of your previous posts (see below) or something else. The 2 toes that are healing swell with exercise. I realize that a definitive answer is not possible so I'll rephrase my question. After the healing of broken toe(s) 5 weeks now, is it common to experience pain, sometimes a lot of pain common. There are times when it feels almost healed and then times with shooting pain and discomfort. If it is not uncommon how long can it last and is there anything I can do to mitigate the pain. Thanks for your reply.

I have a question that i'm looking around for different answers to see if anyone can actually advise me on what is wrong.
For a very long time i have walked in a certain way and also naturally stood in a 'slanted' position to where I have never stood flat on both of my feet at the same time.. so when i stand, i stand on the balls of my feet, with my heels slightly raised off the ground. Not quite on my tip toes, but almost- its as if i am wearing an invisible pair of shoes that have an inch heel on them.

When i attempt to stand up straight with both my feet flat on the ground, I cannot. My heels automatically come off the ground and hover the floor, and when i try and put my weight onto my heels i just fall backwards and have no balance.

It is very difficult to explain, but i have attached photos of the way i stand naturally. It has become increasingly noticable to me, others around cannot notice however activities like trying to weigh myself on bathroom scales have made this problem clear to me- due to the fact I cant place both my feet flat on the scales.
It's as if when i put both my heels on the ground something is pulling me backwards. Alot of strain and stress is felt on the back of my heels and up the back of my leg when I attempt to stand straight with them on the ground, along with sometimes a strain in the tendons connecting my toes to my foot.

Please can you give me some advice, does this sound like a normal foot problem or something that other people experience? Everytime i try and explain this to someone people look at me like I am crazy. I would just like to be reassured that this problem can be fixed and there are roads I can go down. Maybe there is a 'name' for this problem??

It has faded a little but im not sure if its grown out yet? It has been just under 3 weeks. Does it look dangerous to you? I am seeing her in 2 weeks but i am just nervous until then. He only suggested on getting anti fungal solution & he trimmed the ingrown. Eventually I put the antifungal on for 11 months daily and its been great, fungal seems to diminished and I stopped last month because I noticed my bottom of my nail of the bigtoe was drying up (like on my big toes nailbed, where lunula is supposed to be all around the bottom).. I thought it was just reaction from the solution but its been almost 2 months and it looks so bad...is it a fungal infection? or is it something minimal?

I wore the medical shoe for 6 weeks and walked without bending my toes to keep my pinkie stabilized. It healed! But after I stopped wearing the boot, I started walking normally. I normally walk a lot, and I even went to a yoga class where we did a lot of plank pose (like a pushup pose). My toes were tired but it felt good to use them again. But then, all my toes (except the pinkie that was broken) were sore from suddenly being used, and the top of my foot is very swollen and sore. The first 3 toes hurt the most. It hurts to walk at all. If feels like the pain is in the small bones across the top of my foot, and in the joints. And along the side of my foot too (the outside). The toe that was broken is fine.

Should I see a podiatrist? Did I overuse my foot after walking carefully in the shoe for 6 weeks? Is there some kind of physical therapy or exercise I can do? The top of the foot is visibly swollen so I don't want to aggravate it even more.

The toenail itself went through trauma on a past trip, by accident a door was swung into it, causing a slight crack in the middle.

I have OCD in general and I began to get bothered when I glanced at the cracked nail, so I would pick at it. This would also happen when I was in a state of stress, the scratching/picking caused a little relief. At this point there is clearly damage that I have done to my nail and I'm not entirely too sure on how to go about it.

I have done a lot of research on self help methods in order to stop, and from what I found I understand I just have to stop and it will grow back. I have stopped my self from picking and once in a while I will catch myself touching the nail, but I never scratch it anymore.

I've been applying Nutra Nail 'Growth Formula' (w/ Green Tea and Acai Betty). It helps moisturize the nail for quicker regrowth. It's been helping slightly.

I wanted to get an opinion and if there is any way I can have the nail grow back properly.

I have included two pictures of the nail below:

Allograft was performed. Now 3 weeks after Allograft surgery, while non-weight bearing (ankle casted in neutral position no wedges) Achilles tendon re-ruptured again while at resting position. Yesterday after an hour of cardio activity, the right side of my big toe was red, swollen and very painful to the touch. I have since soaked my foot in Epsom salts and applied Neosporin. This evening after a long soak I was using a nail tool to try and detect if it was the beginning of an ingrown toenail due to the cutting performed on the side of the nail. I did see some pus while "exploring". My question is, is this most likely an infection or the beginning of an in grown toenail (also infected). Should I continue to treat at home? Those toes feel sort of numb or tingling, where they meet with the foot. I can't seem to walk (in shoes) unless I perform this clutching movement, even when purposely trying to unclench my feet. My foot is painful after walking like this. (If it helps to arrive at an answer, my other foot has Achilles' tendonitis, and I'm overweight and in my 50s. I do wear supportive (New Balance athletic) shoes, though it doesn't matter what type of shoes I try, as I always behave the same way when walking. However, when walking barefoot, I tend to clench the left toes less often.)

Can anybody help me decide what this is? black spot and blisters on the foot, what does it mean?

I noticed a black spot and blisters on my family friend's foot. I really need your help in my wife's case because I am stuck with my worries.

I am sending this from abroad, and I wish you will take a look at the attached file which includes the initial x-rays and CT and the post cast x-rays, and explains the case in full details.

My wife had a foot injury and I wish to know if I am on the right track or not.

she have had a full non weight bearing cast for 6 weeks removed 2 weeks ago, now on foam walker, walking with limping, full weight bearing, with minimal pain, and foot is fine, no swelling and almost normal with normal arch and mobility.

Please help me with the right decision as regards her condition.

all details are in the pdf file.

Most of the file are a single CT series, so please download it from the right corner then scroll through it, you will finish it in maximum 5 minutes.

Pleeeease....

I'm 32 and am a soccer player. A few years ago, my big toe nails started cracking horizontally through the middle whenever I played more than one game per day. This happens consistently and isn't related to trauma, like getting stepped on. I've tried numerous types of shoes and sock combinations -- cleats, no cleats, turf shoes, multiple socks, thin socks, etc-- without marked improvement. Recently, in addition to the nail cracking, I've started getting intense pain (big toes only) and the nail turns black and blue along the toe nail bed after playing. Again no trauma and my shoes are high quality and fit well. My son is a 1.5 shy of 11 months - as of about a week or so, he's stared to really get into pulling up and stating to try and climb the stairs. Stands with assistance too and likes to walk/step when I'm holding his hands behind him. However, I noticed when he stands, he out toes a bit (not as bad as when he first started to stand at 7-7.5 months) but not he seems to stand on the inside of his feet - he stands and then the outside of his feet don't touch - it looks like over pronation basicaly. He's alert, active and strong, but I wonder why he does this. When he walks with assistance, I don't really see this happen - just with standing. Since he is not walking yet, I wonder what I am to do about it - do I need high top shoes already to re-inforce the ankle? Am I supposed to let him go like this until a few months after he starts walking on his own, or is this going to hinder him from walking? I have attached a picture. First time mom here, so naturally I wonder what the best approach should be.

Should I have an MRI?

I have had lateral foot pain right at the 5th Metatarsal base for several years. Normally it would stay a deep soreness for a couple of weeks then would stop bothering me for a few months and flare up again. I work 60hrs a week standing and fast pace walking on concrete, other than that I come home clean house and take care of my family. About the middle of February it started hurting again. This time the pain more severe. Deep soreness, but also feels as if a knife has been jabbed into the side of my foot. I have been to a podiatrist, he diagnosed me with personal tendonitis and plantar fasciitis. I have been out of work for 4 weeks on rest and I am wearing a Rebound air cast. My pain is NO better. I now have additional pain that runs toward and behind my ankle and sometimes runs horizontally from the
5th Metatarsal base. I do have the clicking noise from (I assume) my ankle with no pain. I have tried to educated my self and my curiosity on dealing with this type of injury. I have read several times that an MRI may be needed and Possible surgery. I called my Dr. Office a few days ago to ask about this and When the nurse called back she said the Dr wants to try me in a Custom Orthotic first and gave me an option for a cortisone injection.. My problem is severe pain in the bottom of my Tibia bone down into my Medial Malleolus, this is sometimes accompanied by pain in my ankle (sometimes it goes from one side wraps around the front of my foot into my ankle bone, so kind of like a half circle), but this doesn't happen all the time, it is mostly my inner foot. Also sometimes it feels as if the arch of my foot where it meets the heel has stabbing pains. My metarsal bones also shoot severe pain from about the general area of the middle toe over to the pinky toe, when these bones hurt the pain shoots along the outter side of my foot from my toes to my ankle as if I am walking on the side of my foot for miles. I also have no idea if it is connected or not but I have also been getting leg cramps and tightness almost a charlie horse kind of feeling on the left side of my calf muscle. When I wake up in the mornings and get out of bed or do a lot of stuff throughout the day it feels like my metarsal bones are cracking and/or clicking and it is pain severe enough to almost make me feel like I am going to fall or lose my balance, like my foot is going to give out. I have had numerous ankle sprains, a little pebble under my shoe could cause my foot to twist. I fell in January and have been having these problems since then. The worst sprain I have had was in 2007 and my ankle to this day still swells to about the size of half a softball and gets so tight it feels like my skin will break open when I am extremely active. Do you know what could be causing this and some things that I could try to get this pain to stop until I can see a doctor?

Can a Matrixectomy be reversed ?

I had Matrixectomy on both of my big toenails back in the 70's and my big toenails look awful. is there any treatment that would make them look better?

Use Dr. Scholls corn Pads ?

Hi,

I've seen nothing on web images that resemble my feet except tailors bunion which it is not as my bones have been with me since birth, as I remember always having wide fitting shoes. My daughter now has same. Which means ache when wearing shoes, no nice summer sandals flip flops, walking without shoes because of comments. It feels as if I have a large ball inserted in the ball of my foot directly behind my 2nd and third toes. Sometimes it feels numb. I don't see any discoloration or notice any swelling. It also doesn't really hurt but is just uncomfortable. The same knee on that side of my body has frequent pain as well. My other foot occasionally feels as if my second toe is cramped even just by wearing a sock. I don't notice any kind of movement of that toe however. Could this be a Neuroma?

About 2 weeks ago I noticed cold spots around my right ankle. I thought it was water, but after a couple days nothing was going away. Then, I started noticing how my calf was also getting tingly. It wasn't until a couple days ago that I started to realize there was actually numbness in my 2nd and 3rd toes. I'm wondering if this is all related and could be Neuroma?

I'm 38 and for many years wore heels. Never had any problem with them and my feet were usually more comfortable in them than flat (flats made my feet cramp). Then, a couple years ago I gave birth to my son. After that I started experiencing plantar faciitis. I'd did stretches to relieve to pain, and it went away. Now, a couple years later this is happening. I almost never wear heels anymore, but I did wear flip flops and do a lot of walking this summer. My feet didn't bother me...until this popped up a couple weeks ago. Is there anything at home I can do to alleviate the feeling? There isn't pain. It's just a strange numb pressure around the affected toes, with the feeling running up the front right side of my calf with the cold patch around my ankle accompanied by tingling.

I don't have insurance otherwise I would have already gone in to have it looked at. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank You!

The top of my foot hurts what cold that be ?

The top left side of foot just above arch hurts

The doctor reattached the toe three weeks ago. The stitches were removed yesterday. The toenail was removed. The nail bed of the toenail is still bloody and mushy looking. How long before the nail bed is no longer wet, bloody and moist? The doctor told me to keep it wrapped but to change the bandage now every day. They gave me occlusive petrolatum gauze strips to put on it before the gauze. Should i use this? Can the toe get wet? How long before the toenail bed begins to heal? How long before the toenail begins to regrow? The toe itself is beginning to heal but the toenail bed still is gross looking. I was in Japan at the time, and the doctors there diagnosed the problem as a Chopart joint sprain and potential navicular fracture. They put me in a plaster cast and sent me on my way on crutches. When I returned to the States after about a month, my podiatrist concluded that I had suffered a joint sprain of some kind, and would probably be fine.

I spent a couple weeks in a boot, with no follow up physical therapy.

Because I still suffer from pain and tingliness/cold in the foot, I have been told to get an MRI. Unfortunately because of a variety of circumstances, I will not be able to do so for at least another three months.

Here is the question: Should I be concerned about the tingling/cold sensation at the top of my foot? I have also noticed blue discoloration when I am fresh out of the shower. If it is a circulatory or nerve problem, is there anything I can do on my own to remedy it?

I have heard that arthritis is a risk for such joint injuries. Is there anything I can do at home to prevent inflammation?

Are there physical therapy exercises I should be doing?

In general, what is my prognosis? I work on my feet, so the thought of losing my job to surgery is a bit alarming. ..

After taking presciption anit-inflammitories, the pain under my feet subsided. However, it seemed to migrate to my three interior toes on one foot. I get pain under the pads of my toes, as well as the connecting joint between the pad and the ball of my foot on all three toes. It is most sensitive when I walk barefoot or if I run on the road. I feel it when I trail run also, but not as severely. I have tried time off, anti-inflammitories, etc.., but it doesn't seem to go away. What can I do?

Would a shoe insert for planters fasciatis work for pain relief of swollen metatarsel joints due to rheumatoid arthritis. ?

Should I have pain in my leg after having foot surgery?

[:(]I had mortons neuroma surgery six weeks ago. I went to a podiatrist today and she took a side view x-ray of my left foot. It showed that my fifth metatarsal was lower than the other four. She said that the likely cause of my pain was that the fifth metatarsal was striking the ground first and, therefore, taking the brunt of the force on every step. She recommended custom orthodics with a modification that would realign the metatarsals.

Does this diagnosis make sense?
If so, is this the best way to treat it?
Are there alternatives? Would strengthening the muscles in my feet help? Is there any other way to fix this problem other than surgery or orthodics?

Thanks for the help.

Since the surgery, my left knee lost about 15 degrees of being straight, meaning it has never straightend out completely since the surgery and has caused me all sorts of ailments. My question is - Can the way I stand have anything to do with my getting athlete's foot in that one specific area on my right foot. It flares up at least once or twice a year. This year I ended up having surgery on 08/22/1012 because it became infected.

Due to the 1996 knee surgery, I've developed a herniated disc, a tilted pelvic, osteoarthritis in left knee, tendon bursitis and arthritis in right knee, hip pain both hips, left and right foot and ankle strain as well as plantar fasciitis.

All information or suggestions are welcomed.

I have been running for years, since I was 15, on and off, but mosty on. In the past few years, a condition has developed which has outlasted multiple pairs of shoes, different lacing techniques, and different shoe styles.

When I go for a run, around the 30-35 minute mark, I start getting pins and needles in my feet. It starts in my toes (big toe area) and progresses within 5-10 minutes to the entire foot, from toes to heel. If I continue running on my feet, the numbness worsens until I cannot feel the ground or the shoes at all. The only way to alleviate the problem is to stop running completely. Once I do, the sensation returns to my feet within a few minutes as if nothing happenned. But then when I start running again, it comes back again within 5-10 minutes.

I do have mildly flat feet and therefore I have tried running with more arch support, but it does not seem to make much of a difference if at all.

I have set up an appointment with a doctor, but the only time available was a month away so I wanted to try my luck on one of these websites, any help or advice would be very appreciated, as this is quicklky ruining my enjoyment of running.

thank you!

They put me in a boot and sent me on my way to come back in a month. Though, after doing some reading I have some concerns about the healing process. In less than 5 months I have plans to head out to Africa to do some field reasurch that is going to require me to be able to both hike and climb extensivly for hours a day. While when they put me in the boot they did not mention possibly needing surgery from what I have read so far it is rare that these types of injuries heal on their own and can often take upwards of 6 months to get people back up to walking normaly and being able to do more physical activity without pain and risk of further injury. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this type of injury or knows more about the healing process. If I am not going to be able to go to Ethiopia for my reasurch next semester I needed to know sooner rather than later seeing as that would mean falling a year behind with my school work and courses. I would truly appreciate your imput. My doctor said that he was going to inject the cyst with cortisone to try to prevent it from coming back. For some reason he changed his mind.
He told me there was a 50-75% chance that it would come back. If it did the best way to remove it would be through surgery. Less than two weeks later and it's back. Because of the location of the cyst, it needs to be removed.

Is it worth trying to get the cortisone injection before surgery? Are the chances of it returning the same with the cortisone injection?

One more question, why would he suggest an orthopedist and not a podiatrist?

Why would it occur again?

What's causing the pains in my foot from my pinky toe to my ankle and fro 1 ankle thru my heel to my other ankle ... that feels like a pinched nerve. ?

I have flat feet and on 11/22/2011 I had that surgery where the dr put that screw looking thing in by my ankle, to keep my foot lined up straight now when I stand. Since then I have had a sharp pain in my foot going from the inside ankle to the outside ankle, that feels like a pinched nerve, It hurts to move my foot around and when I am walking on areas that are bumpy, like thru snow or stones. Sometime if I go to stand up, I don't step on it right and it hurts. I also have a pain from the outside ankle to my pinky toe, when I walk. My doctor can't figure out what is wrong. He took my x-rays to some big seminar or something, where the guy, who invented the flat foot surgery was and showed him my x-rays to see if he could see anything wrong, but he said everything looked fine. My dr has me going to physical therapy right now, but because of my insurance, they aren't doing much with me. The lady massages my foot lightly with some gel, then gives me a belt to put around my foot and with my leg straight,as I am sitting on the table, I pull my foot towards me and hold it for 10 sec. I do it 20 times. Monday she had me try to stand on 2 ball like things with flat bottoms, but it hurt me too much to I had to sit and move my foot on it, then I left. I have to go again this morning. So far none of this is helping me and my foot hurts a little more. Oh, my dr also has me wearing my special shoe inserts that were made from a mold of my foot last year ... I hate them, they are so uncomfortable and don't help. Whenever I tell these drs about the feeling I have in my foot, they look at me like I am nuts or something.
One other problem I have with the same foot is my big toe ... I had surgery on it the same day as the other surgery. I had a lump on the toe bone that was hitting a nerve when I walked that caused a shooting pain through my foot. He said he just needed to go in the side of my toe and sand down the bone. Well a couple days before Christmas he had to do the surgery again because he didn't get the whole lump that was

Can't get over posterior tibial tendonitis ?

Any ideas on this? I am not a diabetic. My GP dismissed it as arthritis and nothing was done. I am 63 years old. The numbness is getting worse and has now spread towards the middle of the ball of my foot. My GP has tested for numbness with a needle and agrees its bad, but does not seem to be at a loss as to what to suggest next. I need advice where to go from here, I clearly need to see a specialist for some tests, it feels like nerve damage. So, not under the ball of the foot...but higher...where your toe hits the ground or bottom of shoe when walking. There is no swelling, redness, bump...nothing. No injury that I can think of. Just one night it started hurting as if there is a raw nerve in one specific spot . I have to wear a callus pad on it w/a hole in the middle and cannot survive without it! It's not getting better. Internet searches don't help me at all..it does not hurt when there is no pressure. It is not numb. Bending it is totally fine. Just hurts when touched. I hate to go to the doctor if it just needs time to heal....however, it's not getting worse, just not getting better. I can't go on walks and I'm starting to favor the side of that foot (left) which can't be good. It gets worse if I walk a bit of a distance. Icing it has helped but just temporary. Any ideas? Ultrasound maybe?

Was an avid runner, got a neuroma between 2nd & 3rd metatarsals - it hurt like hell! Pads and cortisone didn't help, so I had the stupid surgery and got RSD from it. Sharp, stabbing pain in ball of foot never went away at all. Neuroma has been confirmed by another doctor as NOT being removed, too soon to grow back, it's .7 cm on ultrasound. I have two insurances and a sleazy surgeon who left it in there (I think) to milk me for more money... so he could 'go back in there' in a few months. He got rid of me so fast when he saw all of my nerve pain & that he wasn't going to be able to "go back in there" after all. Dirt bag. He writes that he sent the neuroma off to pathology, yet the assistant in the OR writes "N/A" for 'Tissues to be Sent to Lab.' The 'tissue' is still in my foot & I can hardly walk!!! At any rate, I had my new doc try ultrasound guided alcohol injections after I got the RSD calmed down with a few sympathetic nerve blocks. Well, the 2nd injection caused the RSD to flare and spread up through my ankle and half-way up my calf! Help!!! I don't want to limp from this neuroma forever! I've been limping for 9 months now. Just a year ago, I was coaching and running 15-20 miles per week, and now I can't even walk down my street. Can I do anything for this neuroma? It's so frustrating and miserable to 'just live with it.' Please help :(

Odd foot sensations ?

Left foot only--for about 2-3 months--middle of foot sole, intense itching. About 2/3 into the walk, I noticed some pain on the top outside part of my left foot. It was not too bad and I continued the walk. Later that day the pain became worse . . . to the point that I could not put my weight on that part of my foot. Instead I had to walk more on the "inside of my foot." Now, several days later, the pain is still there although it might be a little better. I can walk ok if I roll my ankle in, but it is still painful to put any pressure on the outside of my foot below my little toe. The area is also painful to the touch. I did not fall or twist my ankle during the walk.

I am 48 and have had osteoporosis for about 6 years due to some previous cancer treatments. My last bone density showed another marked increase in bone loss. Don't know if that's an issue or not.

Thoughts? Thank you!

My big toe was stepped on while playing softball about 3 months ago. The nail lifted up a little, but is still attached. It is very black and blue and it is starting to curl a little as it is growing in. I haven't had any pain in the toe for few months, but within the last week it has started to hurt again. Today, it is the worst the pain has been. The toenail is very tender to the touch near the cuticle, and it radiates to the right side of the toe.

It doesn't seem to be swollen and there isn't much redness. It just feels like the bruise is brand new. It's more of an off and on sharp pain every 15-30 minutes rather than a constant throbbing.

I have a pair of crutches if it is necessary.

seroma after morton neuroma surgery ?

my child's feet are a full size different. Is it ok to wear a full shoe size larger for the smaller foot ?

is it bad to wear sox to bed when you have an ulcerated patch of skin on the side of you foot?

the patch of skin is the inside side of the foot /arch area.

what causes skin on bottom of foot in the bend of the little toe to split ?

what could cause Pain and swelling on top of my left foot directly under Big toe?

Foot aches badly when I flex my left foot and very sore to touch,I have not injured the foot, but have started walking approx. 2 miles per day.

Burning Toe ?

My third toe feels like it is burning when I have shoes on. Foot feels stiff but mostly pain free in the mornings, but towards the end of the day I am in a lot of pain (stabbing pain when I actually walk) and limping.

Should I be using crutches, or is it better to continue to walk?

My podiatrist said it was ok to walk but no running, but I would just like a different perspective.

My foot feels alright in the mornings (after being rested all night) but is very painful towards the end of the day, particularly if I've walked a lot that day.

Today, after walking the most I have done since the injury, I have been getting a clicking/popping sensation (and a stabbing pain) with each step I take around the area of the base of the 5th metatarsal.

1. What could be the cause of the clicking sensation?

2. Is it possible to get an avulsion fracture of the 5th metatarsal over time with peroneal tendonitis?

I love them. As a result of a recurrent hip bursitis I was diagnosed 9 months ago with one leg 9/16-inch shorter than the other. I had a 1/2-inch full sole lift added to the sole of all my shoes on the short leg side. This has completely relieved the bursitis which is on the long leg side. However, starting last summer I have developed metatarsal problems in the foot with the shoe lift. I consulted with a podiatrist who told me my toes on that foot are curling too far and causing the problems; he thought the shoes might be too big. My feet measure as the same size. And I have no problems in the foot without the shoe lift.
Question: The sole of the shoe with the lift is not flexible like the other shoe. When walking I do not feel a bend at the ball of that foot with any pushing from the ball. I'm thinking that to compensate the toes on the side with the lift have taken over the push effort. Could that explain my problems? If so, other than getting only a heel lift--which will leave one foot walking at a different angle than the other--is there any other solution to my difficulty?

What could cause toes to go numb? I have had it since birth. As I was 33 at the time he said it was too late to correct with surgery. I have done some extensive research on the internet and think that an "inverted talus" is the same as a "vertical talus".... is this correct?
The reason I am confused is that I have NO rocker-bottome symptoms - the bottome of my foot is completely flat and very wide and my ankle is huge and swollen looking. I cannot bend my foot or point my toes at all and get bad foot and ankle pain when stand or walk for too long. This is generally an ache and acute stabbing pain if I have been on my feet for a very long time.
My question is, without the "rocker-bottom" symptom do I have "congenital vertical talus" or something else? More than just professionally, I regularly run 1/2 marathons, 10k's and 5k's and have for the last 8 years or so since I started college. I've never had a foot injury of any type until now.
I've been training for months for a school and I'm in the best shape of my life. A week ago I bought the new Brooks Ghost 3 shoes (I've ran in Brooks shoes quite often, usually rotating between them and Asics brand). Last Monday I ran 5 miles at an average pace in these new shoes and when I was running I could feel an uncomfortable lump under about where the styloid process/top of 5th metatarsal meet. It was only uncomfortable, nothing seemingly too serious like a pop, crack or pain.
Later in the day and into the next day there was quite a bit of pain when walking. I took it easy, took ibuprophen, used ice and warm water with epsom salts on and off and the pain went away for the most part by late Thursday, early Friday and I felt good throughout the weekend. This last Monday (exactly one week after the run that caused the issue in the first place) I did a 7 mile roach march with about 55 lbs in my pack (this is about average for me) and I felt great until the reemergence of mild pain about 800 meters/half mile from the end. I've been repeating the treatments of ibuprophen, rest, ice, and warm water & epsom salt baths for the last couple of days and the pain is quickly going away.
It should be noted that the pain, even at its worst, comes and goes.
I had an examination today by my doc and he said I had perfect stability and no signs of stress fractures.
After doing a weeks worth of research I'm confused about what the problem is and thus a little unsure of what methods to use to fix it. I have about 2.5 weeks until I need to be in tip top shape.
It seems as though there is a little tenderness in the peroneal tendon(s) when I roll my ankle to stretch them out. Just sometimes, not all the time. To apply pressure anywhere in the foot doesn't really hurt, but if I am walking for a good amount of time I'll get pain around the styloid process area and under in the outside sole area of my foot.
On a scale of 1-10 I'd say the pain at its worst has been a 4-5, more of a scare of what could be on the horizon with a challenging school in my future.
Any ideas? I'm thinking its probably more of a deep tissue/bone bruise given that I have good strength, stability and motion but there is no visible bruising.
Thoughts are appreciated in advance.

old foot injury (probably a stress fracture 10 years ago) often tender, stiff, now toes twitching. The problem is that the skin never hardened so the nail bed is very soft, therefore I cannot wear nail varnish as it doesn't stay on and I can't wear open-toe shoes for fear of someone standing on them (plus they're ugly.) Pain is worst at beginning of weightbearing and tends to warm up. Onset was gradual, but I was pretty active at the time- snowboarding, soccer, running. After one month, started to realize I was annoyed and stopped everything but soccer and started subbing out more and running less. Had 2 days where pain mostly disappeared and then it came back. Doctor thought it was probably degenerative due to old injury (fractured metatarsals 2, 3, 4 + surgery to correct) and was referred to podiatrist. X-rays were negative and pod thought it was the way I walk that was contributing to extra stress on joint. He rec'd orthotics... or dosing up on ibuprofen, staying off my feet, and waiting. PT friend of mine says PT would be a better option. Orthotics seem like a committment. PT seems overblown for a problem more annoying than crippling. In late October I tweaked the front part of my foot between the 3rd, 4th, and 5th metatarsal (maybe sprained). About a week after that I stepped on a nail which went pretty deep into my heel. So because of this I started to limp on toes to keep off the nail wound on my heel(which I now realize was a terrible idea). Weeks went by and eventually the nail wound healed up but the front part of my foot (where I initially tweaked it) still irritates me constantly. Even lying in my bed I have to constantly position my ankle on things to keep the pressure off my foot. I feel the pain throughout the outside (right side) of my right foot. So I guess on the outside part and right under the metatarsal pads.
I have taken two X-rays and an MRI and all showed no type of injury at all. It's now been over 5 months and I'm still in pain every day with not much improvements. I've been wearing supportive shoes and have tryed different orthotics with no improvements yet. My foot is not broken. I'm wondering if its sprained or could a small fracture cause swelling? Maybe there is something out of place in my foot. When I get out of the pool, my foot is completely flat. I am not exaggerating. It looks like a flipper. I pulled a tendon in my foot which lead me to the podiatrist. He said I have really bad flat feet and when I walk I over-pronate(my foot rolls inwards). I got custom made orthotics. They had to be soft because the hard ones put me in soo much pain it hurt to walk. My toes crack every time I move them. The doctor was very concerned about this and ordered an x-ray to see about cartilage shortage. The cartilage was fine. He said that once I start to wear the orthotics it will get better. I had the orthotics for over a year and they still crack badly. They dont hurt when they crack. Also, I have suffered from shin splints for about 6 years now and they are reduced but every once in a while I get them. I cant wear a shoe without my orthotics or my foot rolls to much inward. Does that mean I am going to have to wear these orthotics the rest of my life? Is there anything else I can do? Why do my toes crack? Its only my big toes by the way. I am a 14 year old female. Thanks in advanced...

They are allegedly quite good, i have had them for some years now, and i admit that they actually have helped and i have sort of gotten used to it now.

The way i say gotten used to it, is that when i put them on and walk for about 15mins or so, non stop, it just feels like a normal shoe, it feels normal.
BUT after a certain point in time, when i walk too much, or when i run for a certain amount of time. My feet start to hurt, in a way that i can actually feel orthotics arch support thing which is hard pressing on to my flat feet arch. The only way i can sooth the pain is when i have to stop what i am doing and rest my feet, and then it starts off normal without feeling some pain, but after a while i feel it again.

Can anyone tell me if this is common? Will getting an actually podiatrist to mould a specific orthotix be better?
Thanks so much for your reply on this. From hearing what you said, i think i might just go see a chiropodist (if thats wat u call it these days) and have a check. Because the pain really does hurt, and when i take my shoes off, i can see really puffed up veins on the arch of my feet where the arch support has been pressing on...and also i could also make out 'how' the arch support is 'supposedly' pushing my feet muscles.
But as i rest without wearing them, they go back to normal.

Anyway, thanks again!

Also, can anyone recomend the best treatment for the plantar fasciitis, I have tried everything, from, nite splints, standind on a elevated board, cortizone shots, rolling it on a cold can, ect. Nothing seems to help and it hurts and I walk funny due to the pain and then throw my body out of whack!!!!
